Hey everybody,

before I get to my actual question, I would like to make something clear first. I have been watching the news about the latest incidents in Israel, Tel Aviv and Jerusalem in particular. It is horrible to see how things apparently go out of control and learn about innocent people dying due to whatever cause. It is the people's safety, the world must focus on now, again.

So I am aware of my role as a tourist or hiker when I go to a foreign country like Israel. However, since I planed to start my INT early November, I now wonder if it's a smart idea to do this right now. I realize, there is nothing like an overall safety. Bad things can happen anywhere, anytime. Of course this also applies for the INT. Anyway, how would you judge the security situation on the Shvil? What about the section between Tel Aviv and Arad? Would it be unwise to do this now?

I am grateful for any opinion. Right now, I don't seem to be going anywhere with my thoughts wether to start the hike or not.

All the best,

Jonas.

Here is my opinion based on today's events:

It was almost a regular business day until 6 p.m.. There was only one blocked attempt to attack policemen by the old city in Jerusalem.

The violence errupted two weeks ago and I belive it will fade away completely in the next few days / week.

Yesterday a group of INT hikers went through the arab (moslem) village of  Mash-had near Nazareth, and nothing unusual was reported.

I'd follow the news and make a decision based on what happens in the coming days / week.

6:45 p.m.

One woman was stabbed by the central bus station in Jerusalem.

Just that you get the news from here too:

Two moslem residents of east Juresalem were stopped in Tel Aviv  by the police, for questioning.
Shortly after that they were released. They were going to work. It was a false alarm by some civilians that suspected
a potential problem. Needless to say that until the police indentified and stopped them, there were traffic jams in Tel Aviv.

People here are nervous, but tension will fade away soon, and life will get back to normal, I think...

I drove today along the INT between Lahav to Meitar (day 27). ~ 12 km. It was very peaceful. I say: the INT is safe to hike as safe as any other trail.

Wait a week or two to see that the news get back to normal Israeli news   ... and then make your decision..

To Yankale and everybody else,

I feel compelled to leave one more message in this thread after my security concerns that I left here a while ago!

I just came back to Germany from my first section of the Shvil. In the last weeks I walked the entire trail from Kibbutz Dan in the North to Jerusalem, a unique and beautiful experience. I can't wait to return in spring to continue and finish the way to Eilat. Trusting the locals opinions I was pretty lucky with the weather, considering I only got into two days of rain, so I could enjoy the whole spectrum, the Wadis and the Hula Valley, magnificent Sea of Galilee, Olive Groves, Pine Woods, Uphill, Downhill and the Mediterranean. Landscapes aside, the best experience about the Shvil are the many encounters. Trail Angels, Hikers, Locals of all ethnics and religions welcomed me all the same. It was inspiring.

So did I feel seriously threatened at any point? I certainly didn't. It was very interesting to learn how the Israeli People live their everyday lifes despite the permanent possibility of attacks that sadly never seem to finish. And I think that's pretty much the bottom line. Terrible things can happen at any time. But also in any place, like we learned again a couple of weeks ago. Nevertheless or especially out of this reason it should never make us stop traveling. At least, it definitely won't keep me from it :) See you soon!
