Starting in Tel Aviv and going south

Yes it is a good idea.
Going south from Tel Aviv you have an easy section of 75 km to get in better shape. After that you have
~55 km in the Judean mountains area. Before you get to Arad (/desert) you have another ~135km.
When you get to Eilat fly to Tel Aviv. Over the weekends you can get excellent deals that are not more
expensive than riding a bus. From Tel Aviv to Kiryat Shemona and Dan, check the preface.
